Easy home recycling tips to reduce your carbon footprint

As natural resources become increasingly scarce, living a sustainable lifestyle is more important now than ever before. One of the easiest (and most effective) ways to reduce your carbon footprint is by recycling at home.

Let’s explore some easy tips for recycling at home that can help make a difference both environmentally and financially.

Set up clear containers

Recycling at home is a lot easier when you have containers for each type of recyclable material. The more you set up and use these dedicated crates, the easier it will be to remember which item belongs in each type of recyclable material.

For example, allocate glass in a box and paper in a bag. When recycling day comes around and you want to throw out your rubbish or haul away your recycling, all that’s left to do is put the right container into the appropriate bin.

Reuse items for fun purposes

Certain items can be reused for a functional purpose in the home. Instead of throwing out a wine bottle, you can fill it with fairy lights and use it as a centrepiece. Paper rolls can be used in craft projects, toothbrushes can help with everyday household cleaning, and old buttons can be transformed into bold earrings.

Let your creative juices flow and find another purpose for household items that have run their course. More ideas include making puppet toys out of old socks and transforming egg boxes into propagators for seedlings.

Donate items to organisations instead of throwing them away

Clothing is an item that has the reusability factor that allows people who have unwanted items to pass these items along in many different ways to many other people. Donating clothing can have a massive impact on the environment, which can only be a good thing. Some organisations accepting clothing donations are Enable Ireland, Oxfam, NCBI, Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) and Liberty Recycling. Using these organisations will be one of the most beneficial ways to dispose of your unwanted clothes as underprivileged people can benefit from the donations.

Do you feel inspired to recycle at home? There are plenty of additional ways to make recycling fun, such as gamifying the experience for the kids and offering rewards for whoever recycles the most.
