Maximise your living room space

A person sits on a grey sofa in a cosy, well-organised living room, holding a mug and using a laptop. Framed art decorates the wall behind them, while a table with a teapot and cups maximises living room space in front of the sofa.

Unfortunately, the living room also seems to be the place that gathers clutter, quickly. A cluttered space can make you feel claustrophobic, often without you even realising it. An open, minimalist space will help to create a space in which you can relax and unwind.

Whether you live in a small apartment or you simply want to open up space, here are a few tips on how to maximise the living room space on a budget.

Use a continuous colour theme

Choosing a single colour scheme for walls, furniture and accessories can make a room feel bigger. By avoiding bold, accent colours, there is less contrast and you become less aware of the limitations of space.

Go green

Many people are aware of the positive impact that a mirror can have on a room as it creates the illusion of space. Nature can achieve the same effect by bringing the greenery from outside, inside! If you don’t have space for physical plants, then you can incorporate botanical fabrics in your cushions and furniture.

Be creative with the lighting

Lighting can make a big difference in a space. Dark areas of shadow can make a room feel small and confined. Natural light, in particular, can make a space appear large and open. However, it’s not always possible to have a builder fit windows into the space. Instead, you can select a few lamps that match the aesthetic of the room and place them in an area where their impact is maximised.

Declutter the room

Dedicate a few hours to decluttering the living room and notice the difference! Decide which items to store, throw out, and keep. Pay special attention to unused items and clutter on the floor, and introduce a few dedicated storage areas for belongings that are used on occasion.

Plan a feature wall

It may be tempting to hang many, small pictures on the wall but a lot of wall hangings can make the space feel cluttered. Instead, choose a big and bold feature to create the illusion of space.

If you take the time to keep your room free from clutter and to follow some of our tips above, you’ll be able to enjoy a far more relaxing space..
