Just bought a new home? Here are six maintenance tasks to tick off

You’ve just bought a home, popped a bottle of bubbly and received the keys to your new home – now what? Owning your first home is an exciting milestone and major leap in life, but it also comes with a few cobwebs, faulty pipes and dodgy electrical sockets that need tending to. To make sure your purchase is in tip-top shape, we’ve created a complete maintenance checklist for first-time homeowners.
1. Electrical panel
Although the main electrical panel of your home is often hidden away, it’s an essential element that controls all the power in your house. If damaged, you can expect to sit in the dark with a cold tin of beans for the first week. Search for signs of watermarks nearby and signs of rust. If watermarks are visible and the panel is hot to touch, call in an electrician immediately and make sure the problem is solved.
2. Windows and doors
If you’re moving into an old house, there will probably be a few cracked panes or broken windows. If the budget allows it, upgrade all of the outdated and faulty windows to new aluminium ones. It’s also a good idea to reseal your windows and repaint areas that have been damaged over time. Inspect your door frames as well and make sure that they are all aligned.
3. Walls and ceilings
Walls and ceilings are another element of the house that cannot be ignored. Even the smallest crack can cause a major dent in your bank account, so before moving in, do a close inspection of both and make sure there are no signs of damp areas or significant cracks that could grow. If your house has had a leak, the plaster will begin to bubble or the wall may feel hollow if you give it a knock with your knuckle. Make sure that you tend to these issues before painting and moving everything in as it can be a big and messy job down the line.
4. Roof
The roof endures a lot. It weathers storm after storm and stays strong against the harsh rays of the sun throughout summer – but everything has a breaking point. If maintained, a quality roof can last a lifetime so it’s important to give it some TLC when you move in. If your home has roof tiles, make sure that none have shifted. For steel roofs, you’ll need to keep an eye on rust and nip it in the bud with an anti-rust primer before it spreads.
5. Gutters
While gutters are great for collecting a harsh downpour, it’s not the only thing that falls in here. Get up on a ladder and remove any debris that might cause blockages. While you’re up there, look out for any leaks or parts that might need to be repaired. If they are too old and damaged, it might be best just to replace them.
6. Chimney
There’s nothing like a crackling fire in the middle of winter. If you’re looking to make the most out of the fireplace, then it’s advised to give it a good inspection. Check for any loose bricks and ensure the chimney is in good working order before lighting it up.
